Happy Earth Day! This coming April 22 is a day we can all get behind as we celebrate the mother of all planets — Mother Earth. Years ago, I wrote about a neighbor’s plan to pick up four pieces of litter each day. If we all did that, I mused, we’d make an impact.
Israel Washington, 13, of Oakland, reaches up high to cut a branch at Oakland’s Montclair Park during a previous Earth Day cleanup. This year, from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. Saturday, Montclair Park is again having a community cleanup and a free barbecue starting at 12:30 p.m. Well, this weekend we can do even more, and honor our first responders in the process. On Saturday, Montclair Park is having a community cleanup from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. and a free barbecue starting at 12:30 p.m. Bring your own tools or use the ones on-site. You can even bring the kids, and when they get tired of helping, they can go fishing for crawdads in the pond.
Speaking of Montclair Park, word has it the bathrooms near the baseball field and pickleball courts will reopen soon. Vandalism and neglect have taken their toll on these long-shuttered toilets, but in this case, the call of nature is finally being answered. The city of Oakland is also in the process of getting bids to eradicate the reeds in the pond, which is being choked by the unruly water weeds. It will be interesting to see how much pond can be reclaimed.
