Oil giant Exxon Mobil has filed a defamation lawsuit against California Attorney General Rob Bonta and environmental groups, claiming they are damaging the company's reputation for its advanced plastics recycling initiatives.

Exxon Mobil filed a lawsuit against California Attorney General Rob Bonta and several environmental groups , alleging defamation and disparagement of the oil giant's advanced plastics recycling initiatives. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Beaumont, Texas, accuses Bonta of collaborating with Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, LLP, a law firm with ties to Exxon's Australian business rivals. Cotchett allegedly recruited U.S.

environmental groups as plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Exxon and contributed to Bonta's political campaign. Exxon is seeking undisclosed damages and a retraction of what it considers defamatory statements. This legal action follows Bonta's lawsuit last year, which accused Exxon of decades-long deception about recycling limitations. It also mirrors Exxon's previous lawsuit against activist investors for filing a shareholder proposal on climate change, which was later dismissed by a U.S. judge. Exxon argues that instead of supporting its developing technology, the defendants are publicly attacking it with false accusations
