Investigative journalist and Sky News Australia host Sharri Markson denounced Labor's 'Orwellian' proposal to make social media companies crack down on misinformation, describing it as 'extremely dangerous'.
Under draft legislation released on Sunday, social media companies like Facebook and Twitter could face billions of dollars in fines if they fail to crack down on misinformation and disinformation being spread on their platforms.
Under the Labor government’s proposal, the Australian Communications and Media Authority would be given the power to force social media companies to change how they deal with misinformation and disinformation on their platforms. “We battled with tech giants and other media outlets to get our reporting on Wuhan out, to keep going even though we were being bullied,” she said.
The veteran investigative journalist also pointed out that the law could be used to crack down on opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament, since both the Prime Minister and Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney have denounced arguments by the opposition and the No campaign as “misinformation”.
