The Chief Constable recently remarked that the force may well get more funding if it were renamed “the Police and Health Service of Northern Ireland”.
PSNI officers have dealt with over 100,000 mental health-related incidents in Northern Ireland over the past five years, new figures reveal.
Data obtained from the PSNI through a Freedom of Information request showed 103,975 incidents were recorded over the past five years.This was followed by 22,281 in 2021 and 22,217 the following year. The lowest number of reported incidents was 18,359 in 2020. Mr Boutcher said that, without the necessary funding, they will have to make some “difficult decisions” on what they can do.
“I am a huge, huge supporter of health, and I recognise the immense work that health professionals do — always — but we are becoming the support function for health. “Between March 1st last year and March 1st, 2024, we dealt with 21,425 calls relating to mental health. Our systems aren’t set up to record this data, so these are really conservative figures and just the tip of the iceberg.”
