A multi-agency search spanning over 52 hours for a missing kayaker in San Diego has been suspended due to a lack of conclusive evidence and diminishing survival chances. The search covered a vast area using various assets, but the kayaker remains unaccounted for.

Coast Guard crews, along with San Diego lifeguards and San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel, conducted an extensive search for a missing kayaker for more than 52 hours. The search spanned a vast area of nearly 460 square miles, encompassing Mission Bay, the coastline, and the San Diego River. A variety of assets were deployed, including helicopters, boats, personal watercraft, and surfboards.

The search was initiated after an overturned outrigger kayak, appearing new and broken in half, was discovered approximately 500 yards west of the Mission Bay entrance channel. The kayak was identified as belonging to a man who had departed Mission Bay around 11:45 a.m. Cellphone forensics revealed the last known ping from the missing kayaker's phone occurred at 1:48 p.m. on Friday, just south of the Mission Bay entrance. Despite these efforts, no additional clues were found. The decision to suspend the search was made collaboratively with local agencies, taking into account factors such as negative search results, environmental conditions, and the decreasing probability of survival. The Coast Guard emphasized that search efforts would be resumed if any new information came to light. Authorities urged anyone with relevant information to contact the Joint Harbor Operation Center watchstanders at 619-278-7013.
