This article explores a proposed mission to study the lakes of Titan, Saturn's largest moon. While missions like Dragonfly will focus on Titan's atmosphere, this mission aims to delve into its liquid methane lakes. Initial concepts involved mimicking the movement of a gannet, but technical challenges, particularly regarding power and propulsion, have made this original design less viable.

Titan, one of the solar system’s most fascinating worlds, has a methane-powered hydrological cycle, making it the solar system’s second-largest moon and the only other body with liquid lakes on its surface. While missions like Dragonfly will study Titan’s thick atmosphere, another mission aims to explore its lakes both above and below.

Initially conceived by James McKevitt, this mission was designed to mimic the hunting motion of a gannet, diving into methane lakes and surfacing before moving to the next. However, technical challenges, especially regarding power systems and the required takeoff and diving capabilities, have made this original concept less feasible. RTGs, the only potential power source for such a mission on Titan’s fully enveloped surface, are too heavy for the proposed architecture
