Energy expert Chris Yellend says it's encouraging to hear the deputy president urging businesses to take advantage of opportunities in renewable energy. ECRNewsWatch

Paul Mashatile told a Buy Local Summit that the local business sector should see the energy crisis as an opportunity to move into the production of wind turbines, solar panels, and other forms of energy storage.

Government has taken flak from some quarters, due to what is seen as a reluctance to fully embrace renewable energy as a way of solving load shedding.

Meanwhile, economist Greame Kemer says manufacturing green solutions locally rather than relying in imports will provide a tremendous boost to the economy."There are a number of challenges, not least of which is a fact that South Africa really hasn't got a strong industrial base anymore. The reality is South Africa is in need to invest massively in renewable.

"If you take solar panels, for example, but more should be done to create the capacity for those industrial companies to create real scale to make a meaningful contribution to the demand."
