As temperatures rise and the summer heat intensifies, air conditioners across the region are working overtime.
MASON, Ohio - As temperatures rise and the summer heat intensifies, air conditioners across the region are working overtime. "This is the busiest season in the last three years," said Chris Cox, an HVAC technician with Al's Comfort Technology.
The demand for air conditioning services has surged, with Cox and his team handling up to 30 calls a day, double their usual workload. He noted that the rush began last week, with many units suffering from a lack of routine maintenance.Cox noted that units are often covered in debris. "When you don't have a properly cleaned outdoor coil, your condenser coil or the evaporator coil or a dirty filter, makes the system run harder than it needs to," said Cox. He demonstrated cleaning a condenser coil, which had accumulated debris, using regular garden hose pressure water."In every home, you should have a filter inside, and you've got your condenser coil outside, which technically acts as a filter, but it should be sprayed out," he said."You don't want to bounce your temperature. A lot of people have programmable thermostats. No more than three or four degrees a day," said Cox."There's a fine line between being energy efficient and helping your equipment versus making it struggle harder than you do," said Cox. Cox also suggested tips like closing windows, keeping doors shut and using exhaust fans when showering or doing dishes. If an air conditioning unit is constantly running but not cooling effectively, Cox recommended calling in an expert.
