Sean Simmers |[email protected] That’s appropriate, as Nickal is one of the most successful and decorated wrestling coaches in the country throughout a career that’s spanned more than 30 years.
Consider that Nickal was bestowed two National Wrestling Coaches Association State Coach of the Year awards and has taught and coached countless champions at schools in Colorado, Wyoming, Texas, New Mexico and Kentucky.“My wife says I’m a happier man when I’m coaching wrestling,” Nickal said with a smile. “When I’m not coaching, I feel like I’m missing something.” Nickal is in his first season at the helm of the State College High School wrestling program, taking over the reins from Ryan Cummins, who held the job for 11 years. “Last year, they were shorthanded and, with the urging of my wife, I went ahead and took the assistant coaching position and thoroughly enjoyed it,” Nickal said. “So, when the head coaching position came open, I put my name in for it.” The Little Lions are currently 2-2 overall and 1-2 on the season in the Mid-Penn Conference Commonwealth dual meet wars after State College picked up a win over Central Dauphin Tuesday night at Penn State University’s Rec Hall. “We have a relatively young team. We have a very difficult schedule. We have some young wrestlers that are facing some very tough competition,” Nickal said. “It’s about keeping them encouraged and doing the right thing and if they keep working hard, knowing their hard work is going to pay dividends. “It’s a tough part of the season, starting out with the (Walsh) Ironman, the toughest tournament in the nation and we don’t get an any easy duals in this part of the country, so any team we come up against is a challenge,” Nickal sai
