N.J. weather: Freezing rain could make highways ‘treacherous’ early Sunday
are expected to see freezing rain overnight, leading forecasters to warn of treacherous road conditions on Sunday morning from a coating of ice.
The state Department of Transportation ordered a commercial travel ban on the New Jersey Turnpike and other highways starting at 2 a.m. Sunday.issued a winter weather advisory for the northern half of the state, predicting a period of freezing rain in areas northwest of I-95 early Sunday morning. “This will likely lead to any untreated surfaces becoming very icy and treacherous,” the weather service wrote in a Facebook post.
“Travel may become very dangerous and is discouraged Sunday morning. If you must travel, use extreme caution as roads that look wet may suddenly become ice covered.”The National Weather Service has issued winter weather advisories for 11 New Jersey counties north and west of Interstate 95. Advisories are in effect for Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris and Somerset counties beginning at 7 a.m. Sunday until 1 p.m. The advisory in Sussex and Warren starts earlier at 5 a.m. and expires at 1 p.m.
Advisories begin Bergen, Essex, Union and eastern Passaic counties at 7 a.m. through 11 a.m. The advisory extends to 2 p.m. for western Passaic County.The commercial vehicle travel restriction will be in place from 2 a.m. until further notice.
