National park officials warn visitors of heavy traffic during the New Year holiday weekend.

If you're planning a trip to Joshua Tree National Park to ring in the New Year, be prepared for heavy traffic. Joshua Tree is considered a 'winter park' with temperatures comparable to summer and spring elsewhere. Peak season runs from October through May, but holidays and long weekends see a surge in visitors. The visitor center alone can draw over 4,000 people daily. Park ranger Donovan Smith advises visitors to plan ahead but remain flexible.

'Go into the park with not super high expectations, but with a sense of wonder and a sense of adventure — while doing it safely,' he recommends. Gather all necessary information before entering the park. Utilize the National Park Service website or app for offline use. Identify your top destinations, but avoid rigidly sticking to a plan. Parking lots will likely be full, and the park could operate on a drive-through basis. Don't waste time waiting for a spot. Explore alternative parking options along designated roads. Smith suggests, 'You might find something, you know, just as magnificent as what you would have seen on that trail.' Arrive early, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., to avoid the largest crowds. Consider purchasing a digital entrance pass beforehand
