Fans could be getting the short end of the stick even as the Giants become more competitive.

The Giants benefit from Zaidi’s forward-thinking approach, but as MLB and the Players Association move to eventually expand the playoff field, there’s one significant reason for concern. Since Zaidi assumed his role as the Giants’ president of baseball operations in November 2018, the team’s annual payrolls have plummeted.

With the playoff field set to expand, Zaidi doesn’t have to build a high-priced roster of recognizable stars to contend. Teams that won 95 games under the old postseason format were often sweating out their postseason berth until the final day of the season. Now, teams that win 85 games can sneak into the field.

To date, the most lucrative free-agent contract the Giants have handed out under Zaidi’s lead is the three-year, $36 million deal Anthony DeSclafani signed this winter. With expanded playoffs set to keep teams in the playoff race deeper into September, that type of transaction –solid if unspectacular– could be a sign of things to come in San Francisco.

Keep in mind the one starting pitcher fans might go out of their way to see, Logan Webb, is a homegrown prospect and budding star who will earn under $1 million in 2022.
