Many people in Texas have been following the story of Robert Roberson, a man on death row who was minutes away from execution in October. The story of Roberson’s conviction based on the now debunked shaken baby syndrome hypothesis has also riveted the nation, and it personally resonates with me.describing a Dallas man, originally from Michigan, who was exonerated a few weeks ago in a similar case. I am that man.brought an end to a nightmare that had engulfed my family starting in 2014, soon after the birth of my beloved daughter Naomi.Naomi had a traumatic birth. Chronic bleeding was found on her brain. At just 2 months old, Naomi suddenly fell ill. Over the course of several days, my wife, Brenda, and I made multiple trips and calls to the ER and doctor’s office. When her symptoms worsened, we called 911. Naomi was hospitalized for two weeks, and numerous tests were performed trying to diagnose her illness. A serious gastrointestinal virus was suspected to be the cause of her symptoms. And we were soon relieved to see that she seemed to be making a full recovery.But 10 days into her hospitalization, our nightmare took an even darker turn. A doctor employed by the hospital contacted Child Protective Services and local law enforcement, making allegations of suspected child abuse based on the blood that had been observed on Naomi’s brain. Naomi was ripped from us and placed in foster care.
