The first Black NASCAR champion.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The world's first African-American NASCAR Champion, Wendell Scott, is getting the children's book treatment in Born Driven, courtesy of Oni Press. Oni Press is an Eisner and Harvey award-winning publisher, and will embrace the inspiring nature of Scott's story for a heartwarming comic.

That comic is Born Driven, centered around the late Wendell Scott, the first African-American man to not only compete in NASCAR competition but also become a champion in the sport. Born Driven is written by Saxton Moore Jr, making his debut, with artwork from Nolwe Azul Tamus. Oni Press will officially be releasing Born Driven in stores on November 23. Until then, a preview for the book can be found below.

Born Driven, Coming November 23 Rather than focus on Wendell Scott's time in NASCAR, Born Driven is based moreso on the future NASCAR champion's childhood. At this point in Wendell's life, he was often excluded from soapbox derby races as a child, and didn't have the same access to parts and materials as other racers. Wendell never quit and often placed in the races, despite often being driven off the road for daring to compete.

Born Driven Celebrates Wendell Scott's Story Wendell Scott is a name any kid who loves NASCAR should know. Scott was the first black driver to compete in all divisions of NASCAR, and the first to win at the premier level, while also fighting against immense prejudice, including accusations of race fixing against him and even being poisoned.

Saxton Moore Jr's writing communicates Scott's journey to excellence in clear, engaging prose, while Nolwe Azul Tamus's art is colorful and welcoming to young readers, while also perfectly communicating emotion - especially Scott's resolve to race. Born Driven is the perfect tribute to Wendell Scott, and brings his amazing story of triumph, skill, and commitment to a new generation.
