Emma Stone is dressed to kill—literally—in Disney’s Cruella
The showstopper below, which Stone’s character wears while stomping up the roof of a car in a pair of Doc Martens, does have fascistic shades of’s Immortan Joe. For Beavan, however, the inspiration here was much more innocent. “I remember my daughter’s friend when she was about four, and they were off to a party. And my daughter had a rather conservative party frock, and this other child came with this amazing look.
It took “an army of students and interns and trainees and makers” sewing away in England’s Shepperton Studios to pull off the final look, which required pattern cutterto work out piles of “individual petals” of fabric that were layered into the skirt. This look, and another dramatic gown in the film known affectionally as “the Dumpster Truck Dress,” took up most of the workroom.
When asked which of the hundreds of looks she created for the film Beavan likes the most, her answer perfectly encapsulates her entire vibe. “I’m very fond of Wink’s rat costume,” she said, dramatically rolling the “r” on rat. This would be the furry suit one of Cruella’s little dogs wears in order to assist with one of the film’s many heist scenes.
