PSA: Exclusion is a form of bullying.

that continues to happen to me as an adult, at the hands of those who continuously let me know how much they love and care about me. When I was younger, a friend hosted a trip for her birthday, and it turned out my entire friend group was invited except for me. I was hurt when all I heard about was how much everybody was looking forward to the trip, and how much fun everybody had afterwards. Seeing photos of everyone on the trip except for me hurt even more with the advent of social media.

I want to be included. Inclusion is not just having a seat at the table, but rather, the opportunity for my voice to be heard and listened to. I want the autonomy to make my own decisions. Extend the invitation and allow me the choice of whether I could handle the noise or the crowds. Allow me to devise an action plan if a situation is too much once I’m in it, and be supportive of those choices.

Excluding me isn’t merely unchecked ableism when I’m being excluded because I am autistic. It’s bullying me with a smile on your face because I am autistic. This needs to change by acknowledging the power to make our own decisions about who we hang out with and what our bodies can and cannot handle. Until then, I’ll continue to lead those around me towards greater acceptance, understanding, and inclusion.
