Catcher John Ellis played for the New York Yankees from 1969 to 1972 before moving on to the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers.
Ellis played a total of 13 big-league seasons, and finished his career in 1981 with a lifetime .262 batting average in 883 games., Ellis was diagnosed In 1986 with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a disease that also claimed the lives of his brother, sister and sister-in-law.
Ellis beat the disease and, in 1987 with his wife Jane founded the Connecticut Sports Foundation against Cancer, which is now known as the. Year after year, the Ellis’ annual banquet, most recently at Mohegan Sun, has grown and drawn baseball luminaries to speak, starting with Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford. The CCF has raised more than $9 million to support families victimized by cancer, and for cancer research.
