The Yankees could be desperate to add free agents after losing Juan Soto.
. “Every team that gives me a deal, ‘Hey, before we go with this team, let’s hit up the Yankees over there and just make sure they don’t want you and want to up the price because they are going to have to make a move here. Yankee land is not going to be happy.”if the Mets add $4 million each season from Years 6-15 should Soto exercise an opt out. The Yankees and, finishing with a 16-year, $760 million offer and blowing past all expectations for how far they’d extend to retain Soto.
Frazier’s point is not exactly incorrect, though it’s not like Cashman hasn’t faced these kinds of obstacles before. Yes, the Yankees have routinely been able to add big-name free agents, but they are not always signing their first choices. Cashman, like any GM, must compete with other teams and determine the maximum reach of his offers.
But the Yankees' offseason has a different vibe after they lost Soto, a generational hitter who thrived with them for one season through the World Series. Soto hit 41 home runs with 109 RBIs and a .288/.419/.569 line in 157 regular-season games. Then, he hit .327 with four home runs and nine RBIs in 14 postseason games. Like the Mets, Soto was a focus of the Yankees' offseason — and they have several holes that they could address through free agency.
Does that mean the Yankees will have to pay the extra dollar for a free agent? Sure, but they clearly have the extra money to make it happen. Why Mets owner Steve Cohen didn’t think he would win Juan Soto over YankeesThank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust.
