A man who lured three women from El Salvador to the United States under false pretenses of a better life, only to sexually abuse them, was sentenced to eight years in prison on Thursday. Jorge Alberto Ramos, 45, was found guilty in August of four charges, including aiding and abetting human smuggling . Prosecutors described Ramos as a serial sexual abuse r who preyed on vulnerable women by exploiting their poverty and limited opportunities in El Salvador .
He would offer gifts, express concern for their families, and promise them a brighter future in the United States. Once they arrived, however, he would rape them and threaten to report them to immigration authorities if they refused his advances. Ramos admitted to abusing the women over a decade, telling two of them that he had brought them to the U.S. for his own sexual gratification. Prosecutors had sought a sentence of over 13 years, arguing that Ramos's crimes were particularly egregious. Ramos's defense attorney, Jeremy Schneider, pleaded for leniency, citing his client's difficult upbringing in a war-torn El Salvador and the harsh conditions he endured during his 17 months in federal custody. Despite his defense's arguments, Judge John G. Koeltl handed down the eight-year sentence, stating that Ramos's actions were a grave betrayal of trust and caused lasting trauma to his victims. Ramos, who had worked as an adjunct professor at various colleges in New York City, separated from City College in 2009.
