A former postal worker has admitted to stealing credit cards and stimulus checks from residents along his route, U.S. Attorney Vikas Khanna said.
Between January and September of 2021, Brookins worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service on a route that included the Essex County towns of Montclair and Verona, according to court documents. During that time, multiple credit cards belonging to residents along the route were stolen, activated and used to make purchases, authorities said.
Brookins admitted in court that he stole mail containing new credit cards issued to the residents before activating them, using them to make purchases and selling the credit cards to others, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
