A former Newark police officer is facing criminal misdemeanor charges for allegedly sending innaproporiate

by WSYX Staff Steven Carles . A former Newark police officer is facing misdemeanor charges for allegedly inappropriately contacting a student and sending pictures and a video.

Court records detail an investigation that began in October 2023 after a family formally made a complaint about him sending messages to their 17-year-old granddaughter. Carles then allegedly sent her a shirtless mirror picture unprompted and then told her not to tell anyone. A week or two later, she said he sent a video of him getting out of the shower with a towel around his waist. "2-0" was captioned on the video.

In the statement of facts, a Newark detective wrote that Carles's conduct made the girl "genuinely nervous.""It's really gross disturbing for a way older man to send me those photos, and who is married and has kids and is a police officer. I don't think he should be a police officer. That's terrible. Once again, he should not be able to work at a school. Genuinely, he's a pedophile. That's a strong word to use, but that is how I feel about him.

Newark Fire Captains Augusto Acabou, 45, and Wayne Brooks Jr., 49, were killed when the massive fire tore through the Italian cargo ship Grande Costa D'Avorio last July. Five other firefighters were injured. Acabou was a 10-year veteran of the fire department. At his funeral, he was remembered as a kind and compassionate jokester who loved baseball and his family. Brooks, affectionately known as 'Bear,' spent 16 years with the department after graduating first in his class at the academy. His friends said he loved to cook for fellow firefighters. Both men were posthumously promoted to the rank of captain.
