Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was found guilty of corruption charges on Tuesday in connection with the 1MDB scandal, a state-owned fund from which $1 billion was siphoned into his personal accounts by associates in a complicated fraud that stretched from South East Asia, The Gulf and to Hollywood.Getty ImagesNajib, the first Malaysian leader to be convicted of corruption, was sentenced by the Kuala Lumpur High Court to 12 years in jail and fined nearly $50 million.

Public outrage over the corruption, and stalled investigations led to the defeat of Najib's UMNO party, which ruled Malaysia for more than 60 years, in 2018. The trial, which is the first of five, is considered a landmark test of Malaysia’s ability to stamp out corruption after the scandal rocked the nation’s heart of power.
