Baca is behind bars at a federal prison in Texas, serving a three-year federal prison sentence for obstruction of justice and lying to the FBI.

Former LA County Sheriff Lee Baca outside the U.S. Courthouse in Los Angeles Monday, February 13, 2017. Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca was behind bars at a federal prison in Texas on Wednesday, Feb. 5, serving a three-year federal prison sentence for obstruction of justice and lying to the FBI.

According to a federal Bureau of Prisons online database, Baca is being held at Federal Correctional Institution La Tuna, located in Anthony, Texas, just north of El Paso. But a mistrial was declared after jurors deadlocked 11-1 in favor of acquittal, and the judge in downtown Los Angeles combined all three counts in the retrial that ended with Baca’s conviction. Baca did not take the stand in either trial.

Baca was elected sheriff in 1998 and re-elected three times. He was poised to run again in 2014, but federal indictments unsealed in December 2013, related to excessive force in the jails and obstruction of that investigation, led him to retire the following month. Coleman argued that the ruling could have affected all of Baca’s criminal convictions and urged the appellate panel to overturn the guilty verdicts.
