Johansel Moronta, 29, of Linden, previously pleaded guilty to possessing and obtaining contraband while in prison, according to U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.

A former inmate at Fort Dix prison was sentenced last week to 19 months in prison for his role in a scheme using drones to smuggle cell phones, marijuana and other contraband into the federal correctional facility, authorities said.

The drones were flown from what prosecutors described as “concealed positions” in wooded areas surrounding the prison. The men accused of flying the drones —— also covered the drone lights with tape to make them harder for guards to spot, officials said. Moronta then collected the packages and sold them to other inmates who had placed “orders” with him previously, officials said.

Investigators seized smuggled items, including marijuana, steroids, more than 160 cell phones, 150 SIM cards, 74 cell phone batteries and chargers, 35 syringes and two metal saw blades, authorities had said. Another former federal inmate, Jason Arteaga-Loayza, previously pleaded guilty to his participation in the scheme as well as to distributing narcotics and was sentenced in September 2021 to more than three years in prison.
