Cleveland's all-time leader in relief appearances will go to training camp with the Reds.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Terry Francona continues to surround himself with familiar faces as the new manager in Cincinnati. After bringing bench coach Brad Mills out of retirement and luring away Guardians hitting coach Chris Valaika, Tito has reunited with another Francona favorite in right-handed reliever Bryan Shaw.
Last season, Shaw was limited to five appearances for the White Sox, including a pair of losses to Cleveland. He was designated for assignment by Chicago in mid-April after blowing a save“I always say I’ve been lucky, but the training staff and the guys that we have at every organization I’ve been to that help guys stay on the mound and stay healthy, for me they’ve been fantastic,” Shaw said at that time.
One of Shaw’s career goals is to pitch long enough to pass Jesse Orosco’s 1,252 games, the major league record for pitching appearances. He ranks third all-time in Cleveland history with 519 games, behind Bob Feller and Mel Harder. Shaw’s current career total is 796 games, including his appearances with Arizona, Colorado, Seattle and the White Sox.
