OAKLAND, Calif. — Astros catcher and former California Golden Bears player Korey Lee will make his second start for Houston’s big-league club on Sunday just 15 minutes from where he went to college.
Lee, the Astros’ first-round draft pick out of Cal in 2019, has started just once since he was called up from Class AAA on July 1 to replace the injured Jason Castro. Lee will catch Astros right-hander Jake Odorizzi for the second time in Sunday’s series finale against the A’s. Lee, who grew up in Southern California, had many family members and friends in attendance for the Astros’ three-game series in Oakland. Astros manager Dusty Baker saw an opportunity to reward Lee with a start in his home state as well as get a rest day for catcher Martín Maldonado.
Baker said he will try to get Lee another start during Houston’s three-game series in Anaheim next week. It all depends on who’s pitching and the degree of difficulty in game-calling and the degree of difficulty in the repertoire of pitches that a guy throws,” Baker said.
