A former Brazil international has slammed the decision to include a certain Arsenal star in the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad and described the call-up as “a joke” 😲🤔 Read more here:
Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli
The Selecao released their star-studded squad on Monday with some big names missing out including Roberto Firmino, Renan Lodi and Gabriel Magalhaes. Martinelli has been in fine form in the 2022/23 season with five goals and two assists in 12 Premier League appearances. The star’s inclusion meant that forwards such as Gabriel Barbosa and Matheus Cunha were seen as surplus of requirements. “This is a shame, this is a joke,” Neto said after Martinelli was named in Brazil’s squad.
“What’s Martinelli’s story? What is the story of Martinelli, who has 33 career goals? This is a disgrace. “This has already happened to you and me, Velloso [former Palmeiras and Santos goalkeeper], because we didn’t go to the World Cup because we didn’t play in Rio de Janeiro.“If we had played for Vasco, Flamengo, Fluminense or Botafogo, we would have been in the 1990 World Cup.
