JOHOR BARU: A 25-year-old man was sentenced to 16 years in jail, 16 strokes of the cane and fined RM80,000 for cheating involving investments amounting to more than RM1.1mil.

The accused, Mohd Syawal Safie, pleaded guilty to 16 charges before Magistrate Nurasidah A. Rahman here on Sunday .

According to the charge sheet, the accused, who was working as a bank officer, had offered to help 16 people in managing their investments through a partnership and promised 10% returns every month.Majority of his victims, who are civil servants, took bank loans after falling for his promises. The accused was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years and whipping, and a fine if convicted.In mitigation, the accused pleaded for a lighter sentence, saying that he was a caregiver to his elderly parents and had repented.

Mohd Syawal had also informed the court that he had returned some of his victims' money although not all of them had received it.in view of the rise in cheating cases. The court sentenced Mohd Syawal to one year jail, RM5,000 fine and a stroke of the cane on each count, to be served consecutively.
