The nine-month trial has now come to an end
Lucy Letby has been found guilty of the murders of seven babies and the attempted murders of six others.
The nurse, 33, has been standing trial accused of the murders of seven babies and attempted murders of ten others at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016. She was found not guilty of two further counts of attempted murder. Letby was charged in November 2020 over the deaths at the neonatal unit at the hospital.
The nine-month trial has been taking place at Manchester Crown Court and after weeks of deliberations, last week jurors were given the majority direction where Mr Justice Goss told them he would accept verdicts on which at least ten of them agreed.During the trial, jurors were told that Letby, from Hereford, was said to have deliberately harmed the infants in various ways, including by injecting air intravenously and administering air and/or milk into the stomach through nasogastric tubes.
Letby denied doing anything to harm the children and said that the sudden collapses and deaths could have been due to natural causes, or for some unascertained reason, or from failure of others. The defence described her as a "hard-working, dedicated, and caring nurse" who loved her job.
