Scream Factory is releasing a new 4K steelbook edition of Fede Alvarez's 2013 reboot of The Evil Dead, featuring new artwork and a two-disc set with both 4K and Blu-ray discs. The steelbook is a Walmart exclusive and will retail for $44.98 USD.
When it comes to major horror franchises, one of the most beloved and consistent from the '80s is The Evil Dead . Whether it be the five theatrical nightmares or the killer Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series, the deadites are an unstoppable bunch of monsters. In terms of films, Evil Dead 2013 brought the franchise into the 21st century in blood-soaked fashion. It’s still arguably the scariest entry to date. Now the dreadful reboot is getting a new 4K steelbook from Scream Factory .
A Walmart exclusive, the 4K/Blu-ray combo pack steelbook features new artwork of Jane Levy’s Mia facing the deadite infested cabin in the woods. We only get a shot of her legs, but just like in the third act, blood rain is pouring from the sky and Mia’s holding the series’ signature chainsaw. This is the third time Scream Factory has released this particular film in the franchise. Back in 2022, they debuted a Collector’s Edition 4K slipcover before they dropped their first 4K steelbook a few years later. While this release will have all the same special features as the previous editions, this is the first time the popular boutique label is releasing Evil Dead in a two-disc set, featuring a Blu-ray alongside the 4K. Close Being the first film in the franchise in 20 years when it was released, Evil Dead was a complete reboot. There was no sign of Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) until after the credits rolled. Instead of following a group of friends trying to have a nice weekend getaway, this time around, a fresh-faced group of friends reunite at a cabin in the woods to help Mia, who is trying to beat her drug addiction. Her brother, alongside his friends, try to get her through her withdrawal. However, they picked the wrong cabin to do this in. When they find a creepy book in the basement, the Necronomicon, Mia gets possessed and all hell breaks loose. While the original Evil Dead trilogy from director Sam Raimi are campy horror comedy classics, Evil Dead 2013 is a pure scream-inducing hardcore genre showcase. This was director Fede Álvarez's debut film, and he didn't waste any time putting his old-school sensibilities on full display. That meant practical dismemberment and buckets of blood paired with modern themes of trauma and kinship that give this version of Evil Dead a meaty emotional hook. At the center of that is Levy’s brilliant performance. In just one film, Mia became just as iconic as Ash.
