Donald Faison's Turk and Zach Braff's JD look into one anothers eyes lovingly in an image from Scrubs.
It’s not long until the “Eagle!” lands, and Scrubs fans will finally get to see what J.D. , Turk , and Elliot have been up to in the last fifteen years. If it’s been a while since you’ve watched all 181 episodes of Scrubs across 9 seasons , then here is what you need to remember before watching the rebooted Season 10.
When the series began in 2001, we were introduced to three new interns navigating the chaos of Sacred Heart and the harsh realities of their first year out of medical school. Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian joins the medical team and is the daydreaming narrator driving much of the series. His best friend Chris Turk joins the surgical department and meets his future wife, nurse Carla Espinosa almost immediately. Elliot Reid, is a fellow medical intern who has a complicated, on-again-off-again romance with J.D. that will last the entire run of the show. The Success Of Scrubs Was Down To Its Strong Relationships In the pilot “My First Day,” J.D. struggles to find his way, angering Dr. Perry Cox , Sacred Heart’s sarcastic and abrasive attending physician. J.D. chooses him as a reluctant mentor, even though Cox calls the “newbie” girls names, rants, and growls in his direction. Meanwhile, the unnamed Janitor makes it his personal mission to make J.D. 's life miserable after believing he jammed the front door with a penny. When Turk arrives at Sacred Heart, he is confident and capable, quickly demonstrating his surgical talent. On his first day, he meets head nurse Carla and their chemistry is instant. Her no-nonsense attitude and fierce loyalty to her patients fits with Turk’s overconfidence and bromance with JD, setting the stage for one of television’s most beloved long-term romantic arcs. Over the first season, Turk and Carla’s flirtation grows into a steady relationship, culminating in their engagement and eventual marriage in Season Three’s “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” J.D. and Elliot’s relationship, however, is far more complicated. In Season 1, Episode 14, “My Drug Buddy,” they briefly attempt to be together, only to realize it makes them miserable. This dynamic continues through the early seasons, with J.D. entering into other relationships, including a brief fling with Jamie , aka “Tasty Coma Wife,” and his mentor’s sister-in-law Danni, played by Tara Reid. In Season Two, Elliot dates other men, including Sea Life Dolphin trainer Sean Kelly and, later, one of her own interns, Keith Dudemeister . Dr. Cox’s own arc changes gradually after reconnecting with his ex-wife, Jordan Sullivan , in the early seasons. They eventually go on to have two children, Jack and Jennifer Dylan, and he is promoted to Chief of Medicine, taking over from Dr. Bob Kelso . He retains his signature sarcasm but learns how to play the game to get ahead professionally for his family. Jordan herself is an equally loud and short-tempered character, initially using Cox for casual sex after their divorce, then evolving into a supportive partner. Scrubs’ early seasons explore heartfelt interactions with patients, missteps in procedures, and the characters' complicated personal relationships. Across 8 Seasons, The Scrubs Residents Grow Up, Have Babies, and Get Promoted Over the next few seasons, the main Scrubs characters grow up and progress in their professional and personal lives. Elliot, who had long struggled with low self-esteem and being overlooked at work, treats herself to a makeover, begins asserting herself with Dr. Cox, and eventually takes a position with Private Practice while still based at Sacred Heart. Meanwhile, Turk and Carla, now married, navigate the challenges of trying for a baby. J.D. moves in with Elliot so the Turks can live on their own. He purchases his own deck to drink Appletinis on and starts a relationship with Dr. Kim Briggs . The show gets baby fever in the fifth season when Kim becomes pregnant with J.D.’s child after a one-night encounter. She later relocates to Tacoma, Washington for a new job, and the two co-parent their son, Sam, without maintaining a romantic relationship. Turk and Carla eventually welcome their first child, Isabella, though Carla struggles with post-natal depression. Dr. Cox and Jordan are also expecting around the same time as Kim and give birth to their daughter, Jennifer Dylan , who arrives prematurely and needs medical help. Scrubs continues to balance its trademark surreal humor with deeply emotional storylines. Episodes such as “My Screw Up” deliver heart-wrenching moments, with the shocking revelation that fan-favorite Ben has died and Dr. Cox hallucinates his presence while coping with grief. In “My Lunch” , Dr. Cox spirals again into despair after losing three transplant patients to rabies, blaming himself and temporarily refusing to come to work. One of the most memorable and ambitious episodes is the theatrical, “My Musical” . Written by Debra Fordham and directed by Will Mackenzie, the all-singing episode follows patient Patti Miller , who begins to hear everyone’s speech as a song. The episode shows Elliot telling J.D. that he cannot move into her new house, Carla decides to return to work instead of taking a full year of parental leave, and Dr. Cox criticizes J.D. for his mistakes. All of these events are presented through original musical numbers. By the end, Patti’s surgery is successful, she stops hearing singing, and the characters resolve their issues, with Elliot and J.D. remaining friends and Carla and Turk agreeing on their work plans. Posts 2 By Greer Riddell The Original Series Of Scrubs Had Two Endings, With One Fans Like To Forget The first seven seasons of Scrubs originally aired on NBC. After Season 7, which was shortened due to the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike, the series moved to ABC for Season 8. Creator Bill Lawrence announced that this eighth season would be the show’s last, and all the main characters’ storylines were brought to satisfying conclusions over 19 episodes. The two-part season finale, “My Finale,” follows J.D. on his last day at Sacred Heart Hospital, as he takes a new job closer to his son. J.D. and Elliot are finally dating and, by the episode’s end, have officially moved in together. J.D. and Turk remain best friends despite no longer working at the same hospital. Dr. Cox finally gives J.D. the affirmation he has been seeking for nearly a decade, though it is clear it pains him to admit that his protégé is actually a great doctor. Dr. Kelso, having retired as Chief of Medicine, decides to return part-time to patient care. Even the Janitor and J.D. finally reach a settlement, revealing that his real name is Glenn Matthews! The episode ends with J.D. seeing visions of the many people he has encountered over the years at Sacred Heart. Set to a Peter Gabriel cover of “The Book of Love,” J.D. sees a vision of the future, implying that he will marry Elliot, have a child with her, and remain close to Turk, Carla, Dr. Cox, and Jordan. According to this vision, J.D.'s son Sam will eventually marry Turk and Carla’s daughter, Isabella. This finale honors the series’ long run while offering closure for the characters, but technically, the show didn't stop there. ABC later produced a ninth season, which took place at a new teaching hospital built on the site of the old Sacred Heart. Only three main characters, J.D., Turk, and Dr. Cox, appeared as series regulars, and they were not featured in every episode. The narration and central perspective passed to a new med student, Lucy Bennett , while other medical students, including Cole Aaronson and Drew Suffin , were introduced as the next generation of doctors. Season 9 ended on March 17, 2010, with “Our Thanks,” but it is widely regarded by fans as a separate continuation rather than the true conclusion of the series as it wildly changed the format. Now Scrubs returns for Season 10 on ABC on February 25, giving fans the chance to finally see what’s happened to their favorite characters since the original series ended. Many hope the reboot serves as a seamless continuation, letting viewers move past the widely panned Season 9 and enjoy new moments with the characters they love. We will finally discover whether relationships have stood the test of time, what the characters are doing professionally, and whether J.D. still drifts off into his trademark daydreams.
