An ode to Black women, this podcast discusses everything, from IssaRae’s ‘Insecure’, to the UK government’s response to the pandemic
has only been going since late 2018, it has quickly become a firm favourite, however, Victoria and Jas’ relationship goes a lot deeper than teaming up together on a podcast.“We met in 2012 during the first week of uni,” Victoria tells me as the three of us settle in for a chat via video call.
The pair - who were both studying journalism - were inseparable, playing an integral part in each other’s university experiences, supporting each other through typical uni woes alongside mental health crises and life-changing events. “A week or so before I started university, I had just found out that I was pregnant so I was in a bit of a daze,” Jas shares. “I think in our first conversation, I told her that and she congratulated me, which was a different response to most people.
From there, a basis for a firm and loving friendship was built - one that can be witnessed across the nearly 100 episodes of Black Gals Livin’ - a podcast that incidentally started through voice-notes. “I genuinely think the initial voice note was to do with Nicki Minaj. I don’t know what she did but I know it was a madting so I was just ranting and Vic was like, you need to start a podcast,” Jas laughs. “I just said there’s no way I’ll do it without you.
