After opting out of his deal with the Padres, Jurickson Profar makes Rockies debut at Petco Park, his home the last three years
Jurickson Profar’s phone rang last Wednesday afternoon as he sat in the clubhouse at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was readying to play a camp game to continue to prepare to man left field for his new team, but he wasn’t going to send a FaceTime from Ha-Seong Kim to voicemail.
That’s not to say there isn’t at least a tinge of “what-if” as he looked across the diamond on Sunday at the team he left behind when he opted out of a deal that would have paid him $7.5 million in 2023 and might have been worth another $10 million in 2024 via a mutual option.“It was everything to me,” Profar said of his three-year stay in San Diego. “My teammates, the city, everything.”
The idea that Profar, a client of super-agent Scott Boras, would opt out was a foregone conclusion after the Padres’ postseason run ended on the doorsteps of the World Series. The former top prospect had just enjoyed the best three-year run of his career and, as the baseball world saw, owners around the game were readying for a spending spree. They re-upped with Robert Suarez and Nick Martinez in November. They gave Xander Bogaerts $280 million in December.
He also has a much clearer path toward everyday action in Colorado. In San Diego, Bogaerts’ addition pushed Juan Soto into Profar’s old position. Another one of Profar’s good friends, Fernando Tatis Jr., will take over in right field later this month.
