Sixteen nations will compete for the gold medal in a fast-paced tournament.

For the Paris Olympic games, the soccer tournament is condensed to less than three weeks — a much smaller and more intense timeframe than the World Cup.WASHINGTON — No matter its name, football — or soccer, as it's known in the United States — is the most popular sport in the world.

Sixteen nations will compete in the Summer Games for the men's tournament. In the women's tournament, only 12 nations will be part of the competition.Matches are made up of two 45-minute halves that can end in a draw after 90 minutes. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals, which begins the knockout stage of the competition. From there it is narrowed down to semi-finals, and then a final match for the gold medal on August 9.
