She is also a member of the university’s Rotman Institute of Philosophy. Francesca’s research focuses on the quantum properties of the gravitational field, within the framework of loop quantum gravity. Notably, Francesca’s research incorporates Planck stars – hypothetical exotic stars that she and her colleague, Carlo Rovelli, propose exist within a black hole’s event horizon. Francesca completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Padua, and completed her PhD studies at the University of Pavia.Assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, University of California, Los Angeles Clarice Aiello is a quantum engineer focusing on how quantum physics informs biology at the nanoscale. She is also an expert on nanosensors that harness quantum effects at room-temperature. Clarice leads the Quantum Biology Tech lab at the University of California, Los Angeles, which explores the potential quantum properties of ‘living sensors’ such as cells and proteins to better understand processes such as animal navigation. Her undergraduate studies began at the University of Sao Paulo, and were completed at the École Polytechnique in Paris. She also obtained a master of philosophy in physics at the University of Cambridge, and won a Fulbright Science and Technology scholarship to study towards her PhD at MIT, where she investigated the nitrogen-vacancy centre defect in diamond, the spin of which works as a “quantum bit”.Associate Professor, Centre for Quantum Technologies, National University of Singapore Dagomir Kaszlikowski is a quantum physicist at the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore. His work explores quantum information theory and the foundations of quantum mechanics. His research group also focuses on correlations in quantum physics, the study of which is important for understanding quantum information processing and quantum nonlocality. Dagomir and his colleagues are also interested in the social, economical and environmental impacts of quantum technologies. In his spare time, Dagomir writes screenplays and makes movies. His 15-minute quantum thriller “Seeing without looking” won an award in the 2014"Show me the physics!" video contest, run by FQXI, the Foundational Questions Institute, in the US.Brian has given sell-out lectures at the Royal Institution in London and has spoken at venues from Oxford and Cambridge Universities to Cheltenham Festival of Science. He has also contributed to radio and TV programmes, and is a popular speaker at schools.
