Hankins called the goal-line tackle Watkins made against Houston “amazing.” The play came on a 4-yard pass to Moore in the right flat off play action. The 305-pound Watkins sprinted 11 yards parallel to the line of scrimmage, reaching 14.67 mph in pursuit, according to Next Gen Stats. Watkins recognized it was a play-action pass, he said, because of how the offensive linemen stayed flat, not attacking aggressively as they would on a typical short-yardage run.
“After that, it’s my job to see ball, get ball,” Watkins said. “That’s really how I look at it. See ball, get ball. Go make the tackle. It just so happened that he got close to scoring, but I feel like as a defensive collectively, we came back and did what we were supposed to do. Law [DeMarcus Lawrence] had a great stop, and then we went and closed the deal.
“I think the biggest thing with Carlos is you’re seeing him get more opportunities because he’s always been a very consistent player,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “If you’re a linebacker, you like playing behind a guy like Carlos. He does a good job with the double teams and coming off blocks. He does all the little things very well.”Tight end Jake Ferguson won’t make the trip to Jacksonville.
