Prime Video's hit romance series Every Year After, based on Carley Fortune's novels, has not yet been officially renewed for a second season. Critics have especially praised the show's emotional depth and its strong supporting cast.
Like its source material, Fortune's debut novel Every Summer After, Every Year After follows both the past teenage romance between Percy Fraser and Sam Florek as well as their fraught present. However, the Prime Video series expands past the core relationship, giving romantic subplots to all of Every Year After's main characters, including Sam's older brother Charlie .
Every Year After season 1 doesn't wrap up the characters' entanglements in a neat little bow, and the season finale ends on a major cliffhanger. It's not uncommon for Prime Video to sign off on two seasons of a show before its series premiere. This is what happened with its hit college romance series, Off Campus, and the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle.
However, as of this writing, the streaming platform has yet to sign off on Every Year After season 2. This doesn't mean it won't happen, though. In fact, Every Year After showrunner Amy B. Harris told Entertainment Weekly that she envisions the series running for five seasons.
"Obviously, there's another book that's connected to Barry's Bay that I think will be a very exciting blueprint for us for a potential season 2," she said. Harris is, of course, talking about One Golden Summer, which centers on Charlie Florek's romance and which the end of Every Year After season 1 has already begun setting up.
Beyond Charlie and Percy and Sam, Every Year After's Barry's Bay is home to several other romances, which Harris would also like to explore across a multi-season show.
"We have these six main characters, and I think we'll be adding characters as the seasons go on," Harris revealed. "I really see this as a series, and it's why we built it the way we did so that we can come back and explore a lot more romance. Given that none of them got a perfect happily ever after — even if Percy and Sam's is strongly hinted at — the core Every Year After cast would need to return to continue their storylines. This is especially true for Bradway, as season 1 ends with Charlie collapsing from what appears to be a heart attack.
Furthermore, Charlie is the male main character of One Golden Summer, which is poised to be the source material for season 2. Harris also discussed adding new characters to the Prime Video series, which would likely include Charlie's One Golden Summer love interest, photographer Alice Everly, along with her grandmother, Nan, whom she accompanies to Barry's Bay for the summer.
Like Jordie, there could also be new characters who didn't appear in the books, should Every Year After's universe continue to expand. Every Year After Season 2 Story Details In the Every Year After season 1 finale, Charlie is amazed to spot a photograph of himself in his boss's office. It is a candid shot captured from the moment in season 1's past timeline of Charlie, Sam, and Percy out on the water in the Floreks' father's old boat.
Charlie wonders who took the photo, but all his boss knows is that his wife bought it at a gallery in British Columbia. Of course, One Golden Summer readers will know that the photographer is none other than Alice Everly. In Fortune's novel, Alice is burnt out by her freelance work, and decides to take some much-needed time off by going on an extended vacation with her grandmother to Barry's Bay.
There, she meets cottage caretaker Charlie Florek, whom she recognizes as the subject of the photograph that she took 15 years earlier, which launched her career. Every Year After season 2 is likely to follow Charlie and Alice's romance, as he helps her complete her summer bucket list while worrying about his own health problems.
Charlie and Sam's father died of a heart attack at age 35, and One Golden Summer reveals that Charlie has the same congenital heart condition — which Every Year After is setting up to be much more serious than what's depicted in the book. Meanwhile, Percy and Sam get a tidy happily-ever-after ending in Every Summer After, with the pair moving in together in Toronto, and in One Golden Summer, they're married and expecting.
However, in the show, they're only beginning their reconciliation, so picking up the pieces of their relationship will likely be their season 2 storyline. A potential second season must also address the brewing Chantal-Jordie-Delilah love triangle, as well as Delilah exploring her sexuality now that she's realized she's attracted to both women and men. It's a lot of story, making it easy to see why Harris wants Every Year After to run for five seasons.
