Top prosecutors from all 54 US states and territories are urging Congress to take action against AI-generated child sexual abuse material.
the growing prevalence of AI-generated CSAM was making it more difficult to help real child sex abuse victims, with one expert, Rebecca Portnoff, the director of data science at the nonprofit child-safety group Thorn, telling the newspaper that she and her team had seen a month-over-month increase since image generators first started to reach the public sphere last fall.
The attorney generals also called attention to the recent strides made by deepfake tech, which they explain can be used to study "real photographs of abused children to generate new images showing those children in sexual positions" or victimize previously unharmed children by overlaying their faces onto the bodies of children who have experienced abuse.
"Additionally," reads the letter, "AI can combine data from photographs of both abused and nonabused children to animate new and realistic sexualized images of children who do not exist, but who may resemble actual children."more generally, particularly in regard to "national security and education" concerns.
"We are engaged in a race against time to protect the children of our country from the dangers of AI," the letter continues. "Indeed, the proverbial walls of the city have already been breached. Now is the time to act."
