Attorney General Keith Ellison is set to elevate the charges against Derek Chauvin, the police officer who knelt on the neck of unarmed black Minneapolis resident George Floyd for eight minutes and forty-six seconds.
Chauvin, who was arrested last Friday and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter, will now face charges of second-degree murder. This escalation of charges comes days after Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz asked Ellison to take over the case, and a week after the firstover Floyd's death—and racist policing in general—began to break out across the United States.
"This is a bittersweet moment for the family of George Floyd," said a joint statement by Floyd's family and their legal team. "We are deeply gratified that Attorney General Keith Ellison took decisive action in this case, arresting and charging all the officers involved in George Floyd's death and upgrading the charge against Derek Chauvin to felony second-degree murder.
