Mazda’s U.S. sales fell sharply in January 2026, with only one model posting gains as the rest declined

Mazda ’s US sales dropped 14 percent in January to 28,958 units. The CX-50 was the only model to post a sales increase. Mazda 3, MX-5, CX-30, and CX-90 all saw double-digit drops. Sales at Mazda got off to a rough start in the U.

S. this January, with overall volume down 14 percent compared to the same time last year. Every model in the lineup saw a drop, except for one SUV. Even so, Mazda pointed out that January 2026 was still its third-best January since entering the U.S. market 55 years ago,an oddly upbeat milestone given the circumstances. Read: This SUV Just Did Something Only Two Other Mazdas In History Have Ever Done Last month, the brand moved 28,958 vehicles in the United States, down 14 percent from the 33,681 units sold in January 2025. Factor in the extra selling day this year compared to last, and the year-over-year decline deepens to an adjusted 17.3 percent. The downturn begins with the Mazda3. Total sales for the model reached 2,473 units, down 17.1 percent from last January. The breakdown is where things get more interesting. Sales of the sedan version fell sharply by 39.4 percent to 1,270 units, but the hatchback version went in the opposite direction, jumping 35.6 percent to 1,203 units. Meanwhile, MX-5 sales collapsed to just 395 units, a drop of 42 percent. The CX-30 had an even tougher month, with deliveries falling by 63.6 percent to 2,423 units. The CX-5, still Mazda’s most popular model, also saw a dip, falling 8 percent compared to last year. Still, things may start to turn around soon as the all-new version begins arriving at dealerships. Mazda’s larger CX-70 and CX-90, also posted huge declines. The CX-70 moved 672 units in January, down 29 percent. The CX-90 dropped by nearly half, with 2,707 vehicles sold, representing a 49.4 percent decrease from last year. Can One SUV Keep the Momentum Going? The only model to buck the trend was the CX-50. Mazda sold 10,415 units last month, making it the model’s best January on record. That figure marks a substantial 64.4 percent increase over the 6,335 units sold during January 2025. While U.S. figures trended down, Mazda’s fortunes looked slightly better elsewhere. Canadian sales rose 4.9 percent to 4,974 vehicles in January. In Mexico, sales climbed 11 percent, totaling 8,704 units. It’s hard to say if Mazda will be worried with last month’s sales decline, as it could just be reflective a broader market downturn as fewer Americans now have the means to buy a new car.
