More than 150 people took part in the 'community mile' at Heaton Park

Pupils from E-ACT Academy in Blackley were among the crowds of people who joined together to walk a collective 173 miles in remembrance of those who lost their life in road-traffic collision while raising awareness of road safety.

The Deputy Head teacher of E-ACT Academy spoke on the importance on having the school involved in an event like this. In the last ten years nearly 10,000 people who live, work in or visit Greater Manchester have been killed or seriously injured in road collisions. Both of their families partake in campaigns to encourage careful driving and also had representatives at the walk in Heaton Park yesterday.

“Every death or life-changing injury on our city-region’s roads is one too many and we must all work together to ensure that pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and motorists feel safe and are safe on our roads. By sharing your views on the initial actions we have set out to improve road safety you can help us make Vision Zero a reality.”

Among the walkers was Paralympic gold medallist Dame Sarah Storey, Active Travel Commissioner for Greater Manchester, who also recently took part in the trial for allowing bikes onto trams across the city.
