Everton are expected to complete transfer deal for Beto but intrigue remains over the future of other players
With days left of the summer transfer window and eight months having passed since the failed January efforts to land competition and cover for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, the Portuguese forward Beto - pictured in Liverpool on Monday as the final stages of his deal were being worked on - is now all but a Blue.
The signing of Beto will have a significant impact on the Everton squad. It will allow Calvert-Lewin to work for form and fitness without the burden of responsibility that has weighed upon his shoulders for so long. Beto’s arrival will see the teenager’s situation reappraised and there will be no shortage of Championship clubs willing to take him on before Friday’s deadline, with Preston likely to be at the front of a pack that has included Sunderland, Stoke City and others at various points this summer.
With Everton having signed Jack Harrison as a wide option alongside Danjuma, the two loan moves should mean James Garner is under less pressure to plug a hole out wide once Dwight McNeil, Alex Iwobi and Harrison return from injury and he could therefore focus on competing for his favoured spot. Should Dyche retain a three-man central midfield, Iwobi also offers backup should another club be willing to help Everton with Gomes’ considerable wages.
Gray represents an opportunity for Everton to secure a transfer fee that would be welcomed on Merseyside and which could potentially be used towards another incoming player.
