Verdict from Beth Lindop after Everton Women were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City in the Continental Tyres League Cup

From the moment the team sheets were circulated at Walton Hall Park on Wednesday night, there was an almost tangible air of inevitability about what would unfold.

Of course, there are few teams more capable of stifling an opponent's burgeoning belief than City. Gareth Taylor's side were predictably dominant in the opening stages at Walton Hall Park, though there was one player whose star shone especially bright. Shaw's shot was blocked but it wasn't long before Park was wreaking havoc once more. This time it was Shaw who turned provider, rifling a sumptuous cross across the face of goal. Park deftly turned it in at the back post, her muted celebration offering perhaps the slightest of consolations to Sorensen's side.

And it didn't take long for City to compound the hosts' misery. Just two minutes into the second half, Shaw struck again, pouncing on a loose pass from Megan Finnigan and emphatically drilling the ball into the roof of the net. Sorensen's side came tantalisingly close to halving the deficit when, in the 78th minute, Heather Payne managed to pick out fellow substitute Lucy Hope. The Scot's header was spectacularly saved by the outstretched leg of Maciver, leaving Everton's hopes of getting back into the contest hanging by a thread.
