Stark numbers show how Everton failed to make the most of having Beto and then Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the pitch at home to Arsenal
During last season’s relegation run-in, Everton fans unveiled a banner asking their team to “fight for us” but in truth the Blues barely laid a glove on Arsenal during their 1-0 home defeat on Sunday.
In the equivalent match against Arsenal last season – Sean Dyche’s inaugural fixture as Blues boss – the hosts were able to inflict the then table-topping Gunners’ first Premier League defeat since the previous September and derail their title push with a 1-0 win. I was there for six years, I’ve not been able to do that.” Indeed, this was Arsenal’s first success at Goodison since a 5-2 romp under Arsene Wenger on October 22, 2017 proved the final nail in Ronald Koeman’s coffin as Blues boss.
Everton have been averaging 16 defensive duels won per game so far this season, a figure that puts them in fifth place but this number halved against Arsenal to eight. They’re also averaging 28.2 offensive duels won but this went down to 17, the least in the top flight over the matchday with Tottenham Hotspur top on 57.
