On March 20, 1988 Everton defeated Liverpool 1-0 to deny the Reds from becoming the first team to go 30 games unbeaten from the start of a top flight season

Jubilant Evertonians were certainly Singing the Blues on this day 36 years ago after Wayne Clarke’s goal prevented Liverpool from setting a new top-flight unbeaten record.

Everton knew that 1987/88 would not be their year and that despite being defending champions, the title would be moving back across Stanley Park, for what proved the last time in a sequence of to and throwing that had taken place since 1984. However, denying the Reds a special place in the game’s annals would prove a satisfying consolation prize at least for Colin Harvey in his debut campaign at the helm after former boss Howard Kendall had departed for Athletic Bilbao.

The match was played out in front of a huge nationwide television audience on ITV but it was the parochial nature of the affair that enabled Everton to pull off the famous scalp as they relished their role as Liverpool’s party poopers. The ECHO went with the headline: “Brotherly love! Wayne snuffs out a record run” with Ken Rogers explaining why only the Blues could have pulled off such a feat.

“Both clubs claimed the record was a meaningless intrusion on a match that was always going to be a no-holds-barred battle, but the voice of ultra-professionalism couldn’t hide the fact that both teams had a special incentive.”
