Everton have been linked with a transfer move for Merlin Rohl as a potential replacement for Amadou Onana
Everton could add a touch of magic to their team with a transfer swoop for “Merlin” according to reports.
So what might Rohl, who turns 22 on July 5 and has been capped seven times by Germany Under-21s, scoring twice, potentially offer Sean Dyche’s side? Born just outside the German capital city of Berlin in Potsdam, the city where the ‘Big Three’ of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, US President Harry Truman and Soviet General Secretary Joseph Stalin held their 1945 conference to plan the post-Second World War peace, Rohl’s youth career started nearby at SV Babelsberg 03.
Although he primarily operates in the centre of the park, Rohl is a two-footed player who can also be deployed at left-back which could appeal to Everton given that other than current first choice Vitalii Mykolenko who is currently battling to be fit for Ukraine at this summer’s European Championship finals after picking up an ankle ligament injury in the 2-0 win over Liverpool at Goodison Park, their only other options are 38-year-old Ashley Young and Ben Godfrey, a natural centre-back.
In terms of a personal head-to-head between Rohl and Onana, a broad outlook sees the German ahead for offensive and duels parameters but the Belgian having the edge for defensive and passing attributes. There is little to choose between their respective expected goal figures with Rohl on 0.14 and Onana 0.13 or shots although the Freiburg man opens up a little for shots on target and as eluded to, moves way ahead for successful dribbles and progressive runs .
