Megan Finnigan scored the winner for Everton against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby at Anfield
Everton captain Megan Finnigan has revealed how her quick-thinking at Anfield helped give her side the edge over Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.
But the Everton centre-back later lifted the lid on how winning the coin toss ahead of kick-off was key to getting Brian Sorensen's side over the line. With away fans curiously positioned in the bottom corner of the Kop for Sunday's match, Finnigan opted to kick towards the travelling Blues in the second half; a decision which proved key to helping Everton withstand a torrent of Liverpool pressure late in the game.
"For us today it was almost like a six-pointer because we started the season so poorly, and that was so disappointing, but there’s no better game than a derby to come and win and kind of turn that around. So the girls have been up for it. The first 10 minutes I was a bit nervous. They put us under quite a bit of pressure but after that I thought we were excellent and controlled the game.
