The Everett Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Services Division (EMS) has launched a new pilot program to allow paramedics to administer buprenorphine.

The Everett Fire Department said they are among the first five jurisdictions in the state and one of three agencies in Snohomish County to implement this program. The goal of the medication is to stabilize patients in the field and provide short-term relief from withdrawal symptoms. The narcotic medication can also reduce drug cravings without causing a high.

EFD said this medication will allow for more opportunities to engage patients in conversations about treatment, recovery, and social service connections. The pilot program began on July 29 and five individuals accepted the opportunity to receive buprenorphine and have been connected with or referred to EFD’s social workers.
