Tonight, countless lives are honored and remembered, after families are forever changed by the tragic impact of crime.
VOCAL, standing for Victims of Crime and Leniency, is a non-profit organization founded in 1982 with the goal of honoring and supporting families who have lost a loved one because of crime.
President of the Baldwin County chapter Tracey Goens believes no one should have to endure the pain of losing a loved on to crime alone.“Back in 2007, my father was murdered,” Goens said. “After that happened and we went through three murder trials and the boy basically got off, I wanted to do something for victims. Diane Foster, she’s actually the vice president of our group, got together and decided we wanted to do something to remember crime victims and our loved ones.
In recognition of crime prevention month, multiple attendees brought photos of their lost loved ones at VOCAL Gulf Coast’s candlelight vigil, keeping their memories alive as their light was taken too soon by crime.“Thats somebody’s family,” she said. “It’s somebody that you know. They still want to talk about their loved one, even though they’re gone. It’s still their son, their monther, their daughter, their child. That way it’s part of they’re not gone.
