Running could help protect against Alzheimer’s disease.
In the study, researchers looked at 182 older adults with an average age of 73 and outfitted them with waistband pedometers to track the number of steps they took each day. At the start, the most typical number of steps per day was about 5,600.
Researchers found that greater physical activity over followup was associated with slower beta-amyloid accumulation and lower volume loss.. The benefits were seen with just modest improvement to about 8,900 steps per day from that baseline of 5,600, according to study co-author Jasmeer Chhatwal, M.D., Ph.D., a neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and assistant professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School.
In terms of the mechanism of why exercise would have these effects isn’t known quite yet, Chhatwal added. But previous studies have tied physical activity to a good circadian rhythm, he said, and that improves sleep quality—crucial for clearing sticky brain proteins.
